Together we weave the mat for future generations

Nau mai haere mai, all are welcome to attend Ōtari Raranga wānanga (classes).

These classes run approximately monthly.

• Taonga: Advanced edge-locking styles, Waikawa (open-weave storage baskets) and processing techniques for whiri-based weaving projects.

• The Vibe: Building structural density. This level builds directly on Te Kāhui Pihinga. Just like a young sapling develops its woody trunk, you are moving away from light mahi into material processing.

• This Stage is all about building physical stamina and material mastery through tākiri (stripping fibres) and kōhua (boiling). You stay here until your hands master the strength required for raw preparation mastering advanced structural and preparation techniques to bridge the gap toward complex projects.

Depending on what you are making, you will need to harvest 20+ rau for yourself and start building your own tool kit.

With regular attendance, you will:
– Build your mātauranga (knowledge)
– Strengthen your pūkenga (practical skills)
– Understand the process of harvesting and preparation for preservation
– Have the skills to practice at home.

What’s included in your ticket?
– Five-hour weaving class with experienced kaiako
– Light refreshments are provided, and we encourage you to bring kai to share

Led by Linda Lee (Ngāti Huia, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Kurī, Te Rarawa, Te Aupōuri), Irihāpeti Te Aho (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Pauhawera). and /or our raranga rangatira, Frank Topia (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Haua).

– It is important that everyone turns up on time for karakia
– If class numbers are too low, we may have to cancel (and will offer a refund or transfer), so please check your emails before class
– We offer concession tickets for students, unwaged, seniors, and those with disabilities.
– It is important to us that our classes are accessible to all. If ticket costs are a barrier for you, please visit our website to enquire about our reduced-cost or free tickets
– We welcome children aged 10-14, but they should be accompanied by an adult with a ticket
